Что может означать выражение hug the deck? Контекст: самолеты вылетели на боевое задание, разбомбили там кое-что и повернули домой still hugging ‘the deck’ Книга британского автора. Возможно, это важно.

Мне кажется, это какой-то пилотский жаргон - единственный вывод, который удалось сделать после тщательных поисков в гугле.

hugging the land означает лететь на низком уровне, параллельно рельефу.

hugging the deck, полагаю, означает огибать палубу авианосца перед посадкой.

The phrase means flying as close to the sea level as possible. Also used to mean getting as close as possible to the floor. "Hugging the deck" is of course also used to describe sailors trying to get as close as possible to the "deck" or floor to avoid shrapnel, etc. when undergoing attack, such as in this photo.

Здесь пока вообще нет никаких намеков на то, что речь именно о палубной авиации. Возможно, подразумевается cloud deck, т.е. flying close to the cloud deck. Правда, непонятно, сверху или снизу.

Про бреющий полет и flying close to the ground level, of course - неочевидно, потому что для этого же есть тьма своих собственных терминов: ground-hugging, terrain masking, flying under the radar, hedgehopping, n ap-of-the-earth. З ачем придумывать новые?

Короч, я наткнулся на такой фанфик: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11993339/1/TOPGUN В нем многократно употребляется фраза hug the deck в различных вариациях. Я связался с автором и задал ему вопрос. Вот что он ответил:

As far as the phrase "hugging the deck", it means as close as physically possible to the deck, skimming a few feet or metres above it. The deck can be anything, either a hard deck defined by the rules of engagement, say 10000 feet, or indeed a cloud deck, in which case it would be called a 'cloud deck'. In my story, the deck referred to the ground. So, hugging the deck meant essentially tree top height. 5m above the ground, or what is known as Nape of the Earth fllying.
