"на порядок выше/ниже" - англ. вариант?

Коллеги, как перевести указанную в сабже фразу? Вопрос наивный, но все же... Пока я пользуюсь вариантом by far. Спасибо

By an order of magnitude higher (lower). Хотя как-то раз я столкнулся с native speakerшой, которая это выражение категорически отказывалась понимать, широко открывала глаза и говорила "why you don't just say significantly?" :-))

Действительно. Использовать словосочетание "in the order (by an order) of magnitude" означает в 10 раз больше или меньше. Здесь вот ссылочка такая вот интересная от American editor:
"The concept derives from the scientific notation of very large numbers in which each order of magnitude is ten times the previous one. When the bacteria in a flask have multiplied from some hundreds to some thousands, it is very handy to say that their numbers have increased by an order of magnitude, and when they have increased to some millions, that their numbers have increased by four orders of magnitude."

на руслантре было обсуждение этого выражение - кстати, насколько помню, оказалось, что выражение было употреблено в русском некорректно, поэтому решение было несколько иным. Но не помню каким - а время мое истекло.

I recall Vic belaboring this very point at great length sometime in May - Sept 2003. (Btw, Vic, where have you kanul?)
It was then suggested that if the speaker REALLY means what he says (like for inatance a mathematician writing a scholarly piece for an int'l conference, or something), then we may want to translate this as "by an order of magnitude", or "by a factor of ten", or "a ten-fold increase in...", ili shto-to podobnoye v etom rode.
But if the speaker just said it dlia krasnogo slovtsa, to i "significant", or "material, substantial,... etc" increase vpolne podoidet.
