| перевести лося как hunk, даже вложив это в уста женщины, будет неправильно, потому что см посты девушек выше. ну просто потому что "лось" не значит "сексуальный", ну нет там секса ни на грамм. к лосю как-то не возникает немедленного влечения. (по крайней мере у меня, за всех не могу сказать). |

Were getting away from the actual text a bit, but, we still think, "hunk" works for "лось" if the narrator is feminine. Again (as per usual), context is important.: the "лось" is prefaced by "красивый". so that glides quite naturally into "hunk" (again, if a woman's doing the talking). Female or male narrator, the "красивый" clearly rules out translations like "gorilla" and so forth. HarryWharton&Co suggested earlier that "hunk" would "do fine" if the author were a woman. That's not to say it's the best possible translation, given a lady narrator. Silly Wizard is right, of course: "hunk" doesn't carry any notion of "handsome". It implies a strong and sexually attractive man. Hence, given the context, the word won't work where the speaker's male. Taking the Wizard's wisdom further, also worth considering is that the original meaning of the word "hunk" is "lump" - not normally connected with the word "handsome". However, stating the obvious: context, tone, the gender of the speaker, etc. all need to be taken into consideration. |

| Автор имел в виду физическую силу и "габариты" парня. Ситуация была такая: автор автостопил на дороге, подъехала машина, водитель не открыл дверь, а разговаривал через щелочку в окне. Он спросил, не вооружен ли автостопер, кто он, куда едет, и только после этого пустил его в машину. Автор увидел, что водитель - здоровенный лось и посмеялся над тем, что тот сначала боялся открыть дверь. |

| Автостопер (парень или мужчина), сев в машину с любопытством рассматривает натренированный торс водителя. Так как его невозможно разглядеть ни через зеркало в салоне, ни через боковое зеркало, то следует предположить, что севший парень, повернувшись к водителю,с масляными глазками и с истекающими слюнями, бесцеремонно созерцал его достоинства. Ужас! Попросим аскера написать продолжение. |

in America, hunk does carry the connotation "handsome" A slang term for a sexually appealing man, a person who is sexually attractive or a well-muscled, sexualized man, as in beefcake. I heard Americans use it in that sense. 2. Slang. I guess many ladies would call Jean-Claude Van Damme a hunk. |

Продолжение: Водитель-здоровяк повернулся к автостоперу и спросил: - HOMOSEXUAL?. Автостопер испугался и запротестовал. Водила понял, что ничего ему не улыбается, и стал расспрашивать автостопера о жизни. Автостопер признался, что учится на психолога. Водитель обрадовался и всю дорогу допытывался, можно ли вылечить гомосексуализм, но не приставал. Но садясь в машину автостопер не знал, что водитель - голубой луизианец =), и его комментарий про "лося" означал что-то вроде: "такой большой, а других боится", имхо. |

у "лося" главное не размеры, а выносливость... Была такая песенка у "Дискотеки "Авария"": "/.../ а ты такой здоровый лось, тебе все в душу не скреблось". Имхо тут как раз о больших габаритах, силе и мышцах, а совсем не о выносливости. Кстати, такой большой качок может сдохнуть уже на половине стометровки или в середине пятиминутного раунда, хотя разминается с 100 кг в жиме лежа. И согласен, что сексуальность и привлекательность тут ни при делах. Посмотрите турниры по смешанным боям (ММА) - какие там красоты! Но зато какие там лоси!!! |

Хм... - Чего ты ломишься как лось? или: - Видел, какой "шкаф" пошел? Ну и лосяра! Конечно же в этот контекст данное понимание слова "лось" не подходит. В русском варианте стопудово бы подошло "жеребец". Есть сленговый американизм -moose - *She's one fine moose, if you ask me — Она клевая чувиха, можешь мне поверить She's my moose and you'd better remember it — Запомни, это моя баба.* Можно ли это к данному контексту аскера? Либо вот еще один вариант, мне он больше нравиться - stalwart lad - детина, крепкий парнишка. Или проще - big fellow. |

All this chit-chat about "hunk" implying "handsome"... Oozing sex-appeal in the mind of the beholder, yes, but for that you don't necessarily have to be handsome. Take say, Jean-Paul Belmondo. The ladies tend to think he's rather sexy, but he's hardly handsome in the classic sense of the word. Time spent in North America prompts me to suggest that "hunk" means sexually appealing and of relatively tall height and failry largish proportions. That;s all. The guy in question may also be a real looker, but if he's referred to as a hunk, that's by the by. re: the fact that some dictionary somewhere says "hunk" means "handsome with a well-developed physique". I don't think we should kowtow to the almighty dictionary all the time. They were wriiten by mere mortals like thou and I. Personally, I'd prefer to go by common usage. |

Why? Belmondo is not BEAUTIFUL, but he IS handsome. "Handsome" implies more than just beauty. It implies charm, excellent manners, gentlemanliness. Well, that's at least how I see it. |

I guess 20 years in close proximity to San Francisco has somewhat distorted my perception of gay/straight male intricacies. So, I asked my daughter, a professional editor and an Am English native. She did confirm that "hunk" implies being attracted to somebody with a few exceptions. Expressing insecurity (as in I wish I were a hunk like him) or referring to someone with a worldwide stamp of attractiveness like Brad Pitt. Otherwise it would be limited to female referring to a male. I have a vague recollection of gay men referring to other males as hunks, but I am not sure if this is similar to gay men mockingly calling each other (or themselves) fags. My daughter also said "hunk" is quite dated and sounds weird. But this comes from a 26-year old. I still think that "refrigerator of a man" would be quite appropriate |
