The voltage across Rs, the current sense resistor in the example converter, goes negative with respect to ground so it is important to be sure that the pins of the UC3854 do not go below ground. The voltage across the sense resistor should be kept small and pins 2 and 5 should be clamped to prevent their going negative. A peak value of 1 volt or so across the sense resistor provides a signal large enough to have good noise margin but which is small enough to have low power dissipation
