médic. Inflammation of the meninges, which are three layers of tissue that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis may be caused by a bacterial, fungal, or viral infection; drug allergies; cancer; or other diseases. Symptoms may include fever, headache, vomiting, malaise, and stiff neck. If left untreated, meningitis can lead to convulsions, coma, and death.
