operational control

The exercise of authority over the initiation, continuation, diversion or termination of a flight in the interest of the safety of the aircraft and the regularity and efficiency of the flight.

The subordination of major or strategic formations or units, for the period required for their particular combat missions, to a commander-in-chief or commander responsible for preparing and conducting an operation.
