The task given to units, tactical formations, major formations and sometimes to groups or even individual servicemen to achieve a given objective within a prescribed time in the context of a battle or operation. The substance of a mission depends on the type of operation, the operational concept, the services and arms or branches involved, the strength of the force, the combat effectiveness and potential of friendly and enemy forces, the nature of enemy operations and other aspects of the situation. Missions may be tactical when performed by units and tactical formations, operational when performed by major formations in the course of an operation, or strategic when performed by a group of fronts or armies
or, more rarely, by a single front
in the course of a theatre operation. 2. One or more aircraft ordered to accomplish one particular task. 3. A clear, concise statement of the task of the command and its purpose.
