Одна из древнейших форм книги - свиток 4-3-е тыс. до н. э., со 2-4 вв. заменялся кодексом. Основные материалы для изготовления книги: папирус, со 2 в. до н. э. - пергамент и с 13 в. в Европе - бумага. В античном мире и в средние века книги размножали путем переписывания. Первым способом множественного репродуцирования книги была ксилография. Первой печатной книгой считают текст, воспроизведённый ксилографическим путем в Корее в период с 704 по 751.
