семейство птиц отряда дятлообразных. Длина от 9 до 56 см, ок. 210 видов, распространены широко. В лесной зоне Евразии обычны желна, зелёный дятел, большой пёстрый дятел, вертишейка и др. Долотообразный клюв, прочный череп и мощные мышцы шеи позволяют им долбить древесину, извлекая повреждающих ее насекомых длинным тонким языком.
