A person in authority empowered to impose discipline on subordinates and give them orders. A superior to whom other servicemen are subordinate in the course of duty, even if only temporarily, is known as a direct superior. The direct superior closest in rank to a subordinate is known as an immediate superior. A serviceman may also be a superior by virtue of his rank. For instance, generals and colonels are the superiors of all servicemen, including the level of junior officer. 2.
