Michurinsk, a city on the hill From times immemorial, the city of Michurinsk (former Kozlov) was called just so - the city on the hill. If we would leaf through chronicles, we could see a solemn scene of the foundation of fortress-city on October 11, 1635. Under Edict of Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov, “to prevent wars staged by Tartars between the headwaters of the Voronezh and Tsna rivers a city be built in the fall at Urlyapovo settlement site or where it would be appropriate“, voivodes Ivan Birkin and Mikhail Speshnev, the first builders and founders of new city, launched its construction. They selected an excellent place on the high green hill. The place where the fortress was laid was covered by the forest abundant in wild goats. That is why the name originated as “Kozlovo site” (In English, “Kozlovo” stands here for “abundant in goats”). This is one of the versions why the city was named Kozlov. However, archival documents fixed the name of Semyon Kozlov, a first settler here. |

The city on the hill- that is how M was (has been-если до сих пор называют?) called... |
But there's yet another hypothesis for the origin of the name. |
wars |

The city on the hill- that is how the city of Michurinsk (former Kozlov) was called from times immemorial. OK. This is one of the hypotheses why the city was named Kozlov. OK. |
According to historical records, Semyon Kozlon was the first settler in the town (not city) |
former Kozlov - formerly called Kozlov |
Michurinsk (former Kozlov) has always been known as "the city on the hill". Going throuh the cronicles you will see the history emerging before your eyes when on October 11, 1635 the first brick was laid for this city originally a fortress. |

There were no bricks there at that time, I suppose: ) |
Urlyapovo outpost. |

outpost is OK. |
To В. Well...You also can say: .... the foundation for what was originally a fortress town was laid. - Construction was inintiated by Russian Tsar.... and was led by Ivan Birkin and Mikhail Speshnev. - The location for the new town was chosen perfectly - it sits high on a green hill surrounded by the woods abundant with wild goats. Hence comes its original name - .... |

The location for the new town was chosen perfectly – it sits on a high green hill. The place where the fortress was laid was covered by the forest abundant in wild goats. Hence comes its original name - “Kozlovo wood” |
formerly Kozlov formerly known as Kozlov |
Noblemen Ivan Birkin and ..... took the honor of launching the effort |

Waywode (?), n. [Russ. voevoda, or Pol. woiewoda; properly, a leader of an army, a leader in war. Cf. Vaivode.] Originally, the title of a military commander in various Slavonic countries; afterwards applied to governors of towns or provinces. It was assumed for a time by the rulers of Moldavia and Wallachia, who were afterwards called hospodars, and has also been given to some inferior Turkish officers. [Written also vaivode, voivode, waiwode, and woiwode.] [1913 Webster] |

"Bombay" was a corrupted English version of "Mumbai" , so this case was different from real renaming. |
